Important Information

Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill)

Attention Veterans: You may apply for the Post-9/11 GI Bill online at www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/.

Before electing the new GI Bill you should look at the benefit comparison chart on the web site and be sure you are making the right choice. The form requires that individuals currently eligible for another education benefit make an irrevocable election from their existing program to change to the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Things to keep in mind:
If you are currently using Chapter 30 benefits and switch to Chapter 33 you will only have a total of 36 months of benefits between the 2 programs. However, if you use up all of your Chapter 30 benefits and then apply for Chapter 33, you may be eligible for an additional 12 months of benefits.

Advance Pay
In order to quality for advanced payment, the following criteria must be met:

  1. You must either be a first-time applicant, or have been out of school for at least one term since last using your VA benefits.
  2. You must plan to enroll for at least half-time rate.
  3. You must request the advance at least 45 days before term begins.
  4. Chapter 33 students are not eligible for advanced payment.

Qualified students may request advanced payment by checking the appropriate block on their Enrollment Certification Request Form. The advance will include a partial payment for the first month of the term plus one full month’s allotment.

Note: After you receive an advanced payment, you will not receive another VA educational payment until approximately 2 1/2 months later. Some people like to have the advance to help defray the cost of books and other start-up expenses. Just be sure to weigh the value of an advance against having to wait almost three months before your next payment will arrive.

Monthly Verifications for Chapter 30, Chapter 1606 and Chapter 1607
Students must verify attendance to the VA every month to receive their monthly education benefit. Students can verify their attendance to the VA by phone or Internet on or after the 1st day of the month.

Please use one of the following methods:

  1. Telephone: 1-877-823-2378 (1-877-VA-E-CERT) If NO changes.
  2. Internet www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/

Work Study

Students eligible for VA educational benefits and attending classes at a three-quarter time or higher rate qualify for VA-funded work study positions. All work study positions are related to veterans’ benefits, and there are a variety of work study positions in the Nashville area. For more details, go the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs’ educational benefits website or contact the VA directly at 1-800-827-1000.

Degree Plan

It is your responsibility to enroll in courses required on your degree plan in order to receive VA benefits. You should always have with you an updated degree plan, especially when seeking academic advising and course selection for upcoming school terms.

Fee Deferment

Veterans and Dependents who applied for advance pay at least 45 days prior to official registration or who have not received a regular VA education benefits payment due to VA error may apply for fee deferment.

You must complete the Fee Payment Deferment Request Form. This deferment allows the student to wait for VA monies to make the first and all payments to the school. If VA has not paid by the end of the term, you, the student, are responsible to make all payments to the school.

Eligibility for Deferment of Payment of Tuition and Fees by Certain Eligible Students Receiving U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or Other Governmentally Funded Educational Assistance Benefit
