Prior to taking the computer competency exam, students are asked to perform an initial self-assessment to see whether or not they are good candidates for taking the Computer Literacy exam. This self-assessment can be accomplished by reviewing the list of skills and knowledge required to pass the exam and by taking the practice test.

Skills Areas Tested On the Exam
The Computer Literacy Exam covers five essential areas of computer skills in which students need to be able to demonstrate competency using Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2007:

·    Word (Create, edit, format, etc.)
·    Excel
(Create, edit, format, etc.)
·    PowerPoint (Create, edit, format, etc.)
·    Internet Explorer
·    Windows Concepts

Frequently Asked Questions

1.   Who is affected by the Computer Literacy graduation requirement?
Answer: This requirement affects students who enroll as degree-seeking students in fall 2008 or later, and who graduate under the requirements for catalogs published in Spring 2008/Summer 2009 or subsequently. 

2.   How well do I have to do on the exam?
Answer: The exam is a pass/fail exam for which a score of 75% or better is passing.

3.   Can I re-take the exam if I don't pass it?
Answer: No.  If you do not pass the exam, you will be required to take the course CIS1000 Computer Literacy.

4.   How long is the exam?
Answer: You will be given 90 minutes to complete the exam.  

5.   Can I take a practice test?
Answer: Yes. There is a practice test available and it is highly recommended that you take the practice exam before you attempt to take the Computer Literacy Exit Exam. The practice exam can be accessed by following this link.

Note: The schools computers in the open lab, room C-308, on campus already have all of the software installed to run the practice exam. But if you are going to run the practice exam from your home computer you will need to install some software on your home computer before you can access the practice exam. The
installation instructions can be found by following this link. When you are ready please click on this link to start the installation wizard.

6.   What if I don't want to take the exam?
Answer: You may elect to take our computer literacy course, CIS 1000 Computer Literacy. 

7.   How do I arrange to take the exam?
Answer: Pay $10.00 at the Business Office then present your receipt to the Testing Center. You may contact the Testing Center at 353-3564 or email them at testing.center@nscc.edu

8.   As an RODP student how do I schedule the exam?
Answer: If Nashville State is your home institution you will be subject to the Computer Literacy graduation requirement. You will need to pay the $10.00 at the Business Office then present your receipt to the Testing Center. You may contact the Testing Center at 353-3564 or email them at testing.center@nscc.edu
