Computer Literacy Graduation Requirement
Nashville State Community College is committed to computer literacy. To this effect, Nashville State has established a requirement that all degree-seeking students, by the time they graduate, demonstrate computer literacy. Students are highly encouraged to become computer literate early in their careers at Nashville State so that they can effectively use these skills in their courses. Students can demonstrate computer literacy by using one of the methods listed below. This requirement affects students who enroll as degree-seeking students in fall 2008 or later and who graduate under the requirements for catalogs published in Spring 2008/Summer 2009 or subsequently.
Students should consult with their academic advisors to determine if their chosen majors have a computer course that fulfills the computer literacy requirement. If the chosen major does not have a specific computer literacy course, then the following points should guide the student when determining how best to meet the computer literacy requirement.
Students can choose one of the following methods for demonstrating computer literacy:
• Take and pass the Computer Literacy Exam with a score of 75% or better.
• Pay $10.00 at the Business Office
• Present your receipt to the Testing Center
• Take and pass CIS 1000 Computer Literacy with a grade of C or better.
• Receive credit for Computer Literacy by using one of the other avenues established in the school catalog, such as prior learning experience, transfer credit, etc.
Students who take and pass AIS 1181, Business Software Applications, with a grade of C or better have met the requirements for demonstrating Computer Literacy for graduation. If a student has any questions an advisor will help determine which steps a student should follow to show proof of computer literacy. Failure to comply with the Computer Literacy requirement in a timely manner may result in a delay in graduation.
Note: For majors that require a specific course to fulfill the computer literacy requirement, the Computer Literacy Exam and or CIS 1000 may not be used in place of the designated course.
