Perhaps the most noticeable item is the new Student Services building which houses several offices under the same roof. Now everyone can quickly and easily access departments such as Financial Aid, Career Services Office, Student Services, Business Office, Admissions, and the Bookstore.
Strengthening Student Services
A Virtual Advisor system has been implemented, which allows users to type in a question on the main NSCC Web site and receive an answer. To use this feature, simply click on Ask Us Questions at the bottom of the page and then enter a question. This system means no longer having to wait for business hours or making a phone call for general questions; the information is right there at your fingertips.
You may have seen two additional smiling faces in the Admissions office at S-215 (map)... they belong to Aleece Bell and Seneca McPhee, our Student Support Specialists. One of their main goals is to provide support and assistance to students and faculty, so feel free to stop by and say hello.
Faculty Training for Advising
The FACT (Faculty Advisory Council on Training) Committee has been created and meets regularly to assess advising issues and suggest improvements. This committee is engaged in the detailed task of developing a new web site that will serve as a valuable resource for faculty members in their advising duties. To guide them, the committee is using the results from an anonymous faculty satisfaction survey, which asked for specific issues and problems that the faculty deal with.
In January 2009, NSCC held a Title III Launch day and hosted Tim Culver, a speaker from the firm of Noel-Levitz. This company has been around for 35 years, helping campuses and systems reach and exceed their goals for enrollment, marketing, and student success. Mr. Culver consults directly with institutions, helping them develop, implement, and evaluate their enrollment plans. He specializes in enrollment management, retention planning, Title III and Title V grants, community college planning, and developmental education. He is a phenomenal speaker and offered great insight in the area of retention.
Online Instruction Enhancements
As of November 2010, we have submitted 32 online courses to Quality Matters (QM) to be reviewed according to a standardized rubric. Each course is reviewed by a team of three to five qualified reviewers and takes approximately four to six weeks to complete. During this process, the faculty developers spend a great deal of time editing and improving the course.
