The Biology Program offers courses designed to provide the student with appropriate theory and skills associated with the field of biology. Courses are structured to provide job-related skills as well as skills necessary to pursue higher level science courses leading to the baccalaureate degree. Laboratory exercises are an integral part of the courses and are designed for hands-on reinforcement of basic principles and concepts.

Courses
The Biology Program’s curriculum includes the following courses:

Intro to Biology I and II	Biol 1010 and 1020
General Biology I and II	Biol 1110 and 1120
Anatomy and Physiology I and II	Biol 2010 and 2020
General Botany	Biol 2211

These courses fulfill the General Education Curriculum leading to the A.A. and A.S. University Parallel degrees and are transferable to universities.

The Biology Program also offers the following courses that are not part of the General Education Core Curriculum but are electives for those interested in a career in biology or related field. These courses include:

Principles of Nutrition	Biol 1215
Microbiology	Biol 2230

Advising
It is important that A.S./A.A. students take courses that will count toward the baccalaureate degree at the transfer institution.  Talking with the Nashville State advisor is an important step in scheduling the right courses.

The A.S. and A.A. degrees are designed for students who intend to transfer and complete a baccalaureate degree after graduation from Nashville State.  If the intended transfer baccalaureate institution is known, the student should obtain a catalog from that institution and follow its requirements.  If the intended transfer institution is not known, the Nashville State courses listed below are recommended.  If the transfer institution is a Tennessee Board of Regents University, then the General Education core requirements listed below will meet the university’s general education core requirements.

Our Biology Program is part of the A.A./A.S. University Parallel degrees offered at NSCC. Students complete 41 credit hours in the General Education Core Curriculum and an additional 19 hours associated with the student’s area of emphasis.
