The Chemistry Program offers courses designed to provide the student with appropriate theory and skills associated with the field. Courses are structured to provide job-related skills as well as skills necessary to pursue higher level science courses leading to the baccalaureate degree. Laboratory exercises are an integral part of the courses and are designed for hands-on reinforcement of basic principles and concepts.

The Chemistry Program’s curriculum includes the following courses:

General Chemistry I and II

Chem 1110 and 1120

Fundamentals of Chemistry

Chem 1030

These courses fulfill the General Education Curriculum leading to the A.A. and A.S. University Parallel degrees and are transferable to universities.

The Chemistry Program also offers the following courses that are not part of the General Education Core Curriculum but are electives for those interested in a career in chemistry or related field. These courses include:

Organic Chemistry I and II

Chem 2010 and 2020

For those students that would like to review basic chemistry principles, we offer Chem 1010 Introduction to Chemistry; however, this course may not transfer to other institutions.

A description of these courses and syllabi are available at Course Descriptions on the NSCC webpage.

Advising
It is important that A.S./A.A. students take courses that will count toward the baccalaureate degree at the transfer institution.  Talking with the Nashville State advisor is an important step in scheduling the right courses.

The A.S. and A.A. degrees are designed for students who intend to transfer and complete a baccalaureate degree after graduation from Nashville State.  If the intended transfer baccalaureate institution is known, the student should obtain a catalog from that institution and follow its requirements.  If the intended transfer institution is not known, the Nashville State courses listed below are recommended.  If the transfer institution is a Tennessee Board of Regents University, then the General Education core requirements listed below will meet the university’s general education core requirements.

Our Chemistry Program is part of the A.A./A.S. University Parallel degrees offered at NSCC. Students complete 41 credit hours in the General Education Core Curriculum and an additional 19 hours associated with the student’s area of emphasis. An excellent explanation of the University Parallel degree is available at http://www.nscc.edu/catalog/parallel.html.

For those students interested in pursuing a degree in the chemistry field, we recommend the following courses as part of the 19 elective hours. Students should check with the institution to which they are transferring to determine the appropriate math and physics courses. The courses listed below are only recommendations.

PHYS   2010     Calculus Based Physics I            4 Hours
PHYS   2020     Calculus Based Physics II           4 Hours
CHEM  2010     Organic Chemistry I                      4 Hours
CHEM 2020       Organic Chemistry II                    4 Hours
Extra Hour from General Education Math             1 Hour
Elective                                                                        2 Hours

An advising checklist is available for students to use. It is a list of the general education requirements as well as the recommended courses for each program area.
