Social workers take pride in being the only professionals trained to work with people in their environment, looking at all dimensions of the individual's life. Social work is the profession of doers, problem-solvers who intervene in multiple-level systems and perform various professional roles in a fast paced and ever changing society. The practice of social work requires knowledge of human development and behavior, social, economic and cultural institutions, and the interaction of all these factors. Skills include developing relationships, brokering and accessing services, assessing needs and facilitating change. Social workers assist people in all stages of life, from children to the elderly, and through all situations from adoption to hospice care. You can find social workers in hospitals, police departments, mental health clinics, schools, military facilities, and even corporations.
Through the use of teaching methods that support critical thinking and life-long learning, facility and staff strive for academic excellence. At Nashville State Community college, facility blends education and experience with a strong code of ethics. Every social worker values these principles because they prepare individuals to help others with life’s challenges. Social work students learn to elevate service to others above self-interest, learning how to help people in need and address social problems. Students are taught to help strengthen relationships among people including promoting, restoring, maintaining, and enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities. Social work classes remind students to be aware of the profession’s core values, and to enhance the lives of others in need. Students are taught to challenge injustice in the world, particularly on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed populations.
