John E. Mayfield

John E. Mayfield is the owner of Mayfield’s Book Store in Ashland City, Tennessee. Through his generous contributions, the Mayfield Endowment Fund was created at Nashville State Community College for the benefit of students from Cheatham County. The funds are administered through the NSCC Foundation, and the first scholarship was awarded in the semester of Spring 2004.

“Since I was 15, I wanted to own a book store and give the proceeds to charity,” said Mr. Mayfield. He has realized that dream. Previously from Cleveland, Tennessee, Mr. Mayfield has been a resident of Cheatham County since 1978. He founded the John E. Mayfield Charitable Foundation to support a variety of educational institutions and community organizations. Other beneficiaries of his generosity include Tennessee Tech, Cleveland State Community College, and 4-H (John E. Mayfield 4-H Scholarships), to name a few. He is also President of the Cheatham County Community Foundation, which offers scholarships to each of the four high schools in Cheatham County.

Mayfield takes special pride in the “John & Betty Eggleston Scholarship,” which was established to benefit eager young scholars in Danville, Virginia. As an orphan, at the age of 2, Mayfield was taken for a doctor’s examination. The attending physician, Dr. Eggleston, knew of a good home for the child. The grateful couple paid tribute to the doctor by naming their new son “John Eggleston Mayfield,” who later showed his gratitude to the doctor and his wife, for the introduction to his new parents, by setting up a scholarship in the Egglestons’ names. The initial contribution has generated additional donations from the citizens of Danville, and countless students have reaped the rewards.
