Photography Show to Benefit Scholarship

Ed Clark Gallery-The Nashville State Community College Foundation in partnership with the college’s Visual Communications Department is hosting a Photography Show to raise funds for the Cathy O'Bryant Memorial Scholarship.  Nashville State Community College faculty, staff, and students will present a collection of photographic works. The photographs in the show may be purchases with proceeds going to “The Cathy O’Bryant Scholarship Fund” at NSCC. Some items will be included in a Silent Auction.

Cathy O’Bryant loved all aspects of photography and it showed in her work. She passed on her enthusiasm for the medium to others through teaching. Cathy taught color processing and printing at Nashville State Community College for twelve years. During that time, she attracted many students to the program whose reputation she helped build. Through the years, she nurtured many student photographers who are now successful professionals.

In 2002, O’Bryant passed away from breast cancer. In order to honor her as a gifted photographer and devoted teacher, an endowment was established in her memory. The Cathy O’Bryant Memorial Scholarship assists outstanding photography students as they pursue their academic goals.

The exhibit will take place at the main campus located at 120 White Bridge Road on Thursday, April 12 from 4p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Ed Clark Gallery.

Nashville State Community College’s WorkForce & Community Development (WCD) is hosting a free Business Leadership Team (BLT) breakfast meeting. Each month a topic and speaker will be chosen to address pertinent issues that foster a heightened awareness of business, industry, and public services present in Davidson and surrounding counties. The breakfast meeting will also provide an opportunity to facilitate networking among the members of those sectors.

This month’s topic will focus on Mechatronics, the combination of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Information/Control Technologies into one well balanced program. Today's highly automated factories are critical in keeping companies competitive in the global market. However, these factories create the need for highly trained multicraft technicians in order to run at peak performance. Thus, these are highly paid and recruited positions. The problem is there are not enough candidates to fill the jobs. By utilizing Mechatronics, schools can attract more students and factories can cross train their existing employees for better performance. Guest speaker, Tony Oran, will discuss this new way of thinking.

Tony Oran is the Southeast Regional Manager for Festo Learning Systems. Festo is one of the world's largest pneumatics and industrial automation companies. They have three manufacturing facilities in the US and feel the same stresses of finding and keeping a well trained workforce for today's automated factories. Prior to working at Festo, Mr. Oran spent three years with a consulting and management companies helping them better manage their assets. He has ten years of experience in TN workforce development issues, manufacturing, distribution, and automation.

Come join WCD for this great networking opportunity on Friday, March 9th in the Clement Building, Room C209 at the college’s main campus located at 120 White Bridge Road. The goal is to stimulate jobs and growth for Tennessee’s small business. Guest speaker, Michelle Proctor, will discuss the benefits and impact of this program on the business sector.
