Nashville State Community College Foundation’s Fifth Annual Golf Tournament
The Nashville State Community College (NSCC) Foundation will host its Fifth Annual Golf Classic presented by Skanska USA Building, Inc. to raise money for student scholarships and Foundation activities that help the organization carry out its mission of expanding access to higher education and furthering regional workforce and economic development. This year’s celebrity co-chairs are Amy Grant and Vince Gill.
The Foundation is seeking sponsorship and player participation for this event to be held at Temple Hills Club, 6376 Temple Road in Franklin, on Monday, October 8, 2007. Registration and lunch begin at 11 a.m. with the tournament shot gun start scheduled for noon. 2007 event sponsors include Skanska USA Building Inc., Ingram Barge Company, Charter Construction, Southeastern Constructors LLC, Lipman, WSMV Channel 4, and the Nashville Scene. Open House at New Dickson County Higher Learning Center
Dickson County Mayor Robert Stone and other officials and civic leaders of the Dickson County Higher Education Committee are hosting an Open House for the new Dickson County Higher Learning Center. The event will take place Thursday, August 2nd from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the center located at 222 McLemore Street, Dickson, Tennessee behind Dickson Middle School. The event is free of charge and the public is invited to attend.
The Dickson County Higher Learning Center will provide a central location for area students to take college classes. Nashville State Community College will be the lead institution and will partner with Austin Peay State University. Nashville State will offer general education courses that may be applied to associate or bachelor’s degrees. The fall schedule includes business, English, history, math, psychology, speech, and developmental classes. Austin Peay is expected to offer coursework for a master of arts in education and bachelor of science in professional studies.
Eileen Crane, who has coordinated the project for Nashville State, said “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring college courses to Dickson County residents. We are committed to helping traditional and non-traditional students to get back into college or to take classes for the very first time. We hope the small class sizes offered in a convenient location will be a big draw for area students.”

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY AT NSCC CONTINUES TO GROW
One of Music City's best-kept secrets is the Music Technology program at Nashville State Community College. Now in its ninth year, the program continues to attract students from around the country. Current and former students cite benefits such as the reasonable tuition, smaller class sizes, world-class faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities.
Recent upgrades and expansions to NSCC's recording studio and digital music lab include the installation of a new 48 channel analog recording console, digital surround sound mixing room, ProTools HD system, and six additional ProTools workstations, bringing the total number to twelve (one workstation per student).
The program currently offers fifteen courses. In addition to the Studio Recording and Digital Audio courses, other related offerings include Music Publishing and Songwriting. Employment opportunities for graduates of the program include studio and mastering engineer, music production, and music business positions.

Nashville State Community College Announces Horticulture Classes
Do you love plants? If so, Nashville State Community College is registering students for horticulture classes. This fall Nashville State is offering Introduction to Horticulture, Landscape Design, Landscape Plant Materials I, Advanced Landscape, Arboriculture, and General Botany. Nashville State Community College Professor Earns Certification
Skip Jackson, photography professor at Nashville State Community College, has earned the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation from the Professional Photographic Certification Commission.
Jackson earned this designation after meeting rigorous requirements measuring his artistic and technical competence. The Professional Photographic Certification Commission currently recognizes less than 2,000 Certified Professional Photographers.
The Professional Photographic Certification Commission is the leading body for certifying imaging professionals. Certified Professional Photographers must complete a written examination, an image evaluation, and adhere to a stringent code of conduct. Classification must be renewed on a periodic basis, ensuring continuing confidence in the professionalism of Certified Professional Photographers.

Business Leadership Team (BLT) Breakfast Series
Nashville State Community College’s WorkForce & Community Development (WCD) is hosting a free Business Leadership Team (BLT) breakfast meeting. Each month a topic and speaker will be chosen to address pertinent issues that foster a heightened awareness of business, industry, and public services present in Davidson and surrounding counties. The breakfast meeting will also provide an opportunity to facilitate networking among the members of those sectors.
This month’s topic will focus on Unlocking Your Creativity. Today’s strategies require those in leadership positions to think “outside of the box”. Leaders have the ability to generate many new and exciting ideas, but first they have to discover how to UNLOCK their creative side. Creativity is the ability to generate new and original thoughts and ideas. Guest speaker, Mary Garrison, will show participant how to develop their creative problem solving skills by effectively accessing or using the creative, or right side, of the brain.
Ms. Garrison is a Trainer/Training Advisor/Program Developer. In her role she instructs a wide range of classes, including personal development and leadership courses. Her approach to adult education is to provide an Instructor-led, group-paced, classroom-delivery learning model with structured hands-on activities. With 20 plus years of experience in training and development, she has established herself as an award winning, highly accomplished and motivated workplace training specialist with proven track record of rapport building, resourceful problem-solving and communication skills.

Nashville State Community College Graduation
Nashville State Community College will hold its 37th commencement exercise Tuesday, May 11th, at 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center Complex at Tennessee State University. The college will graduate 750 students this year. U.S. Representative Jim Cooper from the 5th District of Tennessee will confer degrees and certificates to the class of 2007.
The expanded mission of Nashville State allows the college to offer two additional degrees designed to transfer into baccalaureate programs at four-year universities. “The college has again seen an increase in the total number of graduates. There is a significant increase of graduates receiving either an Associate’s of Arts or Associate’s of Science degree,” said Carol Martin-Osorio, Dean for Student Services. “These graduates will more than likely go on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at a four year college or university.”
The majority of the 2007 graduates will receive Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates in high-demand fields such as business management technology, communications technology, engineering, computer technology, computer information systems, early childhood education technology, police science technology, office administration, and computer accounting technology. The college will also confer two Professional Studies Degrees in Information Technology, a Regents Online Degrees.
