FAQ
What is an online course?
Online courses are designed to allow you to study at home. You will be given a username and password to access the course material that has been prepared by your instructor. This online material includes a syllabus, schedule, course content material, quizzes, assignments, etc. You will communicate over the Internet with your instructor and classmates using email and discussion areas.
I'm not very comfortable with a computer; can I still take the class?
At a minimum, you will need to be able to connect to the Internet, send files, research on the Web, enter a URL to get to your course, use email and follow instructions for updating a browser or downloading plug-ins that are needed for your course. An advisor can suggest some courses that are helpful in learning some of these skills. Without minimal computer skills, it is unlikely that you will be successful in the course.
Can I start a course and complete a course anytime I want?
No. Online courses at Nashville State begin and end with the traditional classroom courses. You will be encouraged to attend an orientation session on campus. There will be deadlines for you to complete assignments, quizzes, and tests, just as in a classroom course.
Is it easier to take an online course than a traditional classroom course?
No. In fact, it may be more difficult unless you are an independent learner. Your instructor will guide you through the learning process, but you are responsible for completing the work and mastering the concepts.
Will I have to come to campus for an online course?
If required, you will have to come to campus for placement testing. Contact the Admissions Office at 615-353-3215 to find out. Also, there are some online courses that will require you to come to campus to take proctored (supervised) exams. Other times may be required or suggested. Since requirements for each course vary, check the syllabus for the course in which you are interested or contact the instructor.
How and where do I take tests?
For some courses, you will be required to take one or more proctored exams at the testing center at Nashville State Tech. A photo ID is required. If you cannot come to the NST campus, arrangements will need to be made by you with another testing center or educational agency. Contact the distance education coordinator for this procedure.
Do online courses cost more?
NSCC Online courses do not cost more. If you are taking online courses that are part of the Regents Degree (RODP), there is an additional cost.
How will I communicate with my instructor?
Most communication will take place via email. In addition, you will be provided contact information from your instructor which will include a voicemail number, fax number, and postal address.
