Nashville State Community College

Faculty

Dr. G. Howard Doty, Professor, 615-353-3416

Professional Experience

I am a life long resident of Nashville and graduated from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration (Economics and Law). I also received my Doctorate Degree in Law from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I have also studied law in Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. I practiced law as a trial attorney in all of the trial courts for almost 20 years. I was the managing partner of Doty and Doty, Attorneys.

As a trial attorney, I have experience in business and legal issues that arise in each of my courses. I have been teaching all of the law and law related business courses here at Nashville State Tech Community College for about 20 years.  I primarily teach Business Law I and II, Business Ethics, Investments, and Legal Issues for the Internet.

My Family.  I have three sons who are all in college; therefore, I can appreciate what many of you students are going through. All of us are very active. My picture above is of me cycling in the Swiss Alps. We do a lot of white water canoeing, snow skiing, surfing, hiking, and even serious mountain climbing. I travel extensively and have visited 66 different countries, 49 states, and almost all of the Canadian Provinces. This Christmas break I traveled to Athens and Corinth, Greece and this past summer, I traveled all over Europe, especially to the Alps.

My Teaching Philosophy Students find my classes unique. They are designed to use case books with current cases of legal and ethical interest. My teaching philosophy is to inspire students to think about legal and ethical issues that arise in real life.  We analyze real ethical and legal issues from both sides of the issues and seek to determine what is best for the individual and society along with what the law requires. I believe that my courses should be challenging to students and through these methods of teaching they will learn.

Kelvin L. Elston, 615-353-3710

I am originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee. I’m a 1984 graduate of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee where I majored in Business Administration.  In 1986, I received my B.S. degree from Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, in Management and Marketing.  While at BSC, I was a member of the men’s basketball team. Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I toured with the Athletes in Action basketball team in the Philippines and Soul Korea.  In 1999, I received my Masters degree from Cumberland University in Organization & Human Relations Management.

Before joining the staff at Nashville State I was a branch manager for Nations Credit for 10 years and a general manager for Hampton Inn for 2 years.

My teaching experience began in 1995 at Columbia Central High School.  While at Columbia Central I was the boy’s junior varsity head coach.  After two years at Columbia Central I joined the men’s basketball staff at Cumberland University and helped guide the men’s program to its first 22 game winning season since becoming a four-year university.  In 1997-1999 I moved over to the women’s program and was the head recruiter for the nationally ranked Lady Bulldogs.

Currently at NSCC, I am the Chapter Advisor for Kappa Beta Delta, a national business honor society.  I am an Achieve Global Trainer for Workforce Development and a member of the Faculty Senate.

I’m married and have one son.

David Gerth, Associate Professor, 615-353-3423

Background and Experience

I have been a resident of Middle Tennessee for most of my life and attended public school in Nashville through the eighth grade. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science at Vanderbilt University after graduating from Battle Ground Academy. Later, I completed a master’s degree in business administration at Brigham Young University. Subsequently, I became certified to teach high school mathematics in Tennessee. I am currently working on a doctorate in education at Tennessee State University.

I worked in business for approximately twenty years. Most of this time was spent in small business, where one “wears many hats.” I have experience in light production, operations, design, purchasing, customer service and sales, payroll, cash management, accounts payable, and human resource management.

I taught for short periods of time in Thailand and Brazil, and later began my domestic teaching career as a high school mathematics teacher. After two years, I began teaching at Nashville State. Although I have taught Introduction to Business and Principles of Management, I currently teach Business Management Applications, Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Business Statistics, and Human Resource Management. My educational philosophy includes a desire to promote student-centered learning. I support constructivism and the practical application of learned content. I like to use the case method and team collaboration. In addition to learning fundamental principles and concepts, I want students to learn how to think critically, solve problems, communicate, and work in teams.

Quenton Pulliam, 615-353-3424

My experience is primarily in business ownership and management for the past thirty-odd years, having owned and operated several retail and wholesale businesses. I have earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in business, economics, and education. Additionally, I have completed approximately thirty hours of graduate work beyond the master's degree.

I claim no expertise in anything because that could get me into trouble; however, I remain active in the business community and continue to read about and study the fascinating world of business. I hope this background provides me with the knowledge and ability to assist you as you navigate through our course.

The business world is a particular interest of mine since the subject is relevant to our lives on a daily basis. Sometimes it's difficult to see how the business, economic, and political events reported in the daily papers, various other periodicals, and television news affect us personally, but they do. I think a worthwhile goal for our course is to help each of us improve our business and economic literacy and understanding. Achieving this goal will give us the tools to interpret the daily economic events in our cities, states, country and the world and to realize how we are affected by them. I hope that we are able to take an abstract subject, demystify it, and apply it to the contemporary issues which concern us all.

Work Experience

My work and teaching experience covers over 35 years. I served in the US Army (Vietnam), as a Tennessee state employee, as an independent consultant, as an employee of four Fortune 500 companies and now with NSCC.  I have experience in corporate training, human resources, management, marketing, retail sales, as adjunct faculty at two community colleges, and as fulltime faculty at NSCC.

My initial college work culminated in a degree in English Education - Secondary Education and I was to be a high school English teacher except for a four year detour in the military.  After I was discharged from the US Army I worked in state government and then in business and as an independent consultant.  I also obtained an MBA from the University of Tennessee with a major in management and a minor in marketing.

My Family

I have been married 38 years to the same wonderful woman and we are the parents of one son.  We also have a very challenging 3 year old border collie, two cats (15 and 5), and 65+ goldfish in a 1200 gallon pond in our back yard!  When I am not teaching, I am water skiing, exercising, traveling, and enjoying nature.

My Teaching Philosophy

I strongly believe that the students are our customers and therefore are the focus of my role at NSCC.  I instruct courses on campus and via WebCT.
