Teaching offers students the opportunity to work with children and youth from early childhood to young adults.  Teachers shape the future by providing quality learning experiences and encouraging children and youth to reach their potential.

Nashville State Community College offers several options for students who desire a career in teaching children and youth.  The educational programs offered at NSCC are designed to meet the differing career needs of the students.

Educational Programs at NSCC are organized according to the area of emphasis that the student seeks.  The area of emphasis is determined by the age/grade level or specialty area in which the student would like to teach. 

To become a certified, licensed teacher who desires to teach in public schools, a four-year degree is required. NSCC provides the first steps toward a career in teaching by offering university parallel degree programs designed to meet the first two years of a four-year teacher education program. 

The following is a brief summary of the different educational program areas:

Early Childhood Education
Associate Degrees and Technical Certificates are available for those who wish to care for and teach children from infancy through third grade.  This includes preparation for those who work in child care as well as those who seek teaching license.

Elementary Education
NSCC offers a university parallel degree program for students who wish to become a licensed teacher of children from grades kindergarten through sixth grade.  
             

Secondary Education
A university parallel degree program is available for students who plan to become licensed teachers in grades seven through twelve.

Special Education
A university parallel degree program is available for students who plan to become licensed teachers in special education and teach children with special needs in grades pre-k through twelve.

Physical Education
A university parallel degree program is available for students who plan to become licensed teachers in physical education and teach children in grades kindergarten through twelve.
