Admissions Procedure
The Surgical Technology Program is presently offered two times a year. One begins in the fall (August) and is completed the following May (lasting approximately nine months). The other begins in the spring (January) and is completed the following fall (December).
DEADLINES:
The admission procedure outlined below must be completed no later than the end of September to apply for the spring program (beginning in January) or by the end of June for the fall program (beginning in August).
WHAT YOU MUST DO TO ARRANGE AN INTERVIEW:
The application process for the Surgical Technology Program is as follows:
1. Submit an Application for Admission to the Admissions Department (If you are presently taking classes here you do not need to do this).
2. Have transcripts from your high school (or an official copy of your GED score) and transcripts from any other college you attended sent to the admissions office.
3. Take the Compass Placement Test if:
You are under 21 years of age and have an ACT math, English, or composite score of 18 or less (or SAT score of 710 or less); and
You have not successfully passed either College-level English and math courses or completed remedial arithmetic (DSPM 0700) and developmental reading or writing (DSPR 0800, DSPW 0800) with a grade of C or higher.
4. Submit a Program Application (found in the Application Packet link at the top of this page) before the appropriate deadline.
5. You must have completed any required remedial/developmental courses (as determined by placement test scores) before an interview will be granted. These courses include: DSPR 0700, DSPR 0800, DSPW 0700, DSPW 0800, DSPM 0700
6. The application process MUST be completed no later than the above stated deadlines.
Acceptance into the Program will be based on previous grade point average, interview score, successful completion of courses counting toward Surgical Technology Program (see below) with a C (75) or higher, previous work in the medical field, and Tennessee residency (Tennessee residency is not a requirement for the Program)
The courses listed below count toward the Surgical Technology certificate and may be taken prior to acceptance into the Program. TAKING THESE COURSES DOES NOT GUARANTEE ACCEPTANCE INTO THE PROGRAM. These courses are:
BIOL 1000 Medical Terminology
SURG 1005 Microbiology for Surgical Technology
BIOL 1004 Basic Anatomy and Physiology
SURG 1006 Chemistry and Pharmacology
Enrollment in classes with class numbers beginning in 'SURG' except 1005 and 1006 requires interview and instructors approval.
*Re-interview requires that the admission procedure be repeated by the deadline for the next class.
