Nashville State Community College
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I support the NSCC Foundation?
There are so many reasons to support the NSCC Foundation but the most important reason is so that we can create an environment of success for our students. Whether it is improving the programs they receive, the facilities they use, or by providing them with scholarship support, the NSCC Foundation is determined to help improve the quality of life for everyone involved with the college.
What is the NSCC Foundation?
The Nashville State Community College Foundation is a non-profit corporation chartered in 1994 for the exclusive support and benefit of Nashville State Technical Community College. The Foundation, with utmost integrity and respect for its donors, accepts and administers all gifts for the benefit of the college. It is the Foundation’s goal to improve the quality of life for all those involved with Nashville State and to provide complete and accurate representations of the needs and goals of the college.
A 29 member Board of Trustees (comprised of 24 voting members) including both volunteers from the Nashville community and employees of the college meet quarterly to discuss the issues facing the Foundation and the College. Most of the Board of Trustees’ involvement comes at the committee level; committees include College Advocacy, Development, Endowment, Finance and Allocations, and Nominating Committee. The Board of Trustees is very active in supporting the college and our students. For example, the Board of Trustees has taken a very active role in advocating for the critical facility needs this college has by meeting with and working with local and state legislators to find a solution and the initial results have been very positive for the college.
How does the Foundation raise money?
The Foundation raises money through the annual Internal Campaign, Golf Classic and Sweethearts for Scholarships Dinner & Auction, personal solicitations, and grants made to the Foundation. Proceeds from Golf Classic and Sweethearts benefit the General Scholarship Fund while donations made to the Internal Campaign can be designated to several different areas. Through friendships with corporations, private foundations, alumni and other friends of the college, several named scholarships and endowments have been established. The Foundation also makes grant requests to organizations whose funding priorities match the needs and goals of the college. For example, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation Scholarships were made possible by a grant made to the Foundation.
What happens when I make a donation?
As soon as you make a donation, a record of your gift is entered into the Foundation’s donor database and you receive a letter/receipt after it is process. The funds are earmarked for your designation. In February, the Foundation Board of Trustees’ Finance and Allocations Committee meets to review the funds available for allocation and makes a recommendation to the board. If money has been designated for a certain cause it will be used only for that designated purpose.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Your donation may be tax deductible, please check with your tax preparer for more information. When you participate in either Golf Classic or Sweethearts for Scholarships, only a portion of your payment will be tax deductible.
