SACSCOC Visits Nashville State Community College For Accreditation Review
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (November 30, 2017) – A team from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) visited Nashville State Community College for a three-day evaluation of the college’s operations and standards, and issued a very complimentary but preliminary report.
SACSCOC is the prestigious accreditation agency for higher education in the South, monitoring major research universities, like Vanderbilt, to two-year colleges like Nashville State. The agency’s inspection indicates that the college is well-managed and maintaining expected standards.
SACSCOC’s ten-member committee completed its visit in November. During its visit, academic programs and services at Nashville State’s main campus on White Bridge Road and five of its seven off-campus sites were heavily scrutinized. As part of the evaluation, SACSCOC representatives held meetings with students, faculty, staff and members of the Board of Regents to validate the college’s compliance with the SACSCOC’S Principles of Accreditation, which are the same for all colleges and universities under its jurisdiction. According to Nashville State’s President George H. Van Allen, “the 54-page report is the best in the college’s history of excellent accreditation summaries.”
In reviewing the report, college officials were particularly pleased with the SACSCOC’s reaction to its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which was commended. “The focus on creating a comprehensive approach to the first-year experience is innovative for a two-year institution. Moreover, the QEP proposal leverages existing efforts at the college to create a structure that will support the transition and success of first-time students.” Van Allen said the conclusions about Nashville State’s QEP “underscores the college’s complete focus on the success of our students.”
Dr. Van Allen applauded the efforts of the entire Nashville State Community. “Based on the preliminary findings, we fully expect our accreditation to be reaffirmed. This is another proud moment for the college. Many faculty and staff dedicated countless hours to assist with the planning for the visiting committee, ensuring that all aspects of the college were on full display. We indeed have a healthy and high-performing college. I hope the reported findings will give the college the recognition it has earned and reassure the public that Nashville State is committed to high standards, its students, and the many communities it serves.”
