Nashville State Jazz Ensemble receives recognition from DownBeat Magazine

4.29.19

The Nashville State Community College Jazz Ensemble has received recognition from leading music publication, DownBeat magazine.

The 10-member group was named the winner in the community college Blues/Pop/Rock category in its 42nd Annual Student Music Awards (SMAs). The awards were announced last week and are published in DownBeat’s June issue here. This is the first time Nashville State has been included in the list of award recipients in DownBeat’s SMAs.

“We were honored to participate in an event that brought music students together from all around the country, “ said David Edgington, Director of Music at Nashville State. “I hope the music created by these students inspires other school ensembles to reach their goals.”

Given since 1978, the DownBeat awards recognize groups in 13 categories in five separate divisions: junior high, high school, performing high school, undergraduate college and graduate college. Recordings are judged by a panel of jazz performers and teachers on both performance and engineering criteria.
